The summer of 2006 marks the third year that the town of Kennebunkport will participate in the Healthy Maine Beach Program. We are joining the State of Maine, and 17 coastal and inland communities to support healthy recreational waters.
From the first week in June through Labor Day, trained volunteers will monitor the beach conditions and obtain sterile water samples at seven sites along Goose Rocks Beach as well as one site on Colony Beach. This information and the samples will be delivered to the lab in Sanford. The water samples will be tested for fecal bacteria. The weekly test results will be posted on www.Maine Healthy Beaches.org.
The Kennebunkport Public Health Department is administering this program. Water related illnesses include skin rashes, ear and eye infections, stomachache, diarrhea and flu like symptoms. Bacteria and viruses found in water can be a cause. If you accidentaly swallow or come in contact with contaminated water you have the potential to become ill.
We are asking for your cooperation to help keep our beaches safe for all to enjoy. Please, if you have diarrhea or are vomiting, do not go to the beach. If you have a child in diapers, dispose of the diapers and wash cloths properly. Pick up after your dog. Animal feces are a cause for contamination. We can do nothing about animals and birds in the wild , but we can control domestic animal activity.
You will see Healthy Maine Beach signage at both beaches. Please note the caution notice regarding
the tidal pools. Shallow water and hot summer temperatures provide the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Remember that children, the elderly and the chronically ill are our most vunerable populations.
